Audi A4 1998

The first generation of the famous model Audi A4 1998, received index B5. Auto was developed for 5 years, and production began in 1994. The main competitors for the A4 were Mercedes and BMW. The platform for the car was the same as that for Passat. The new car has become very popular, as evidenced by the sale. Take, for 1995, for which it has been sold 290 thousand cars. The first generation produced prior to 2001.

The car has a difference from the previous one of Audi 80, both the exterior design and interior. Inside, in principle, present the classic style of Audi - the arrows are red, white scale devices. Devices have a good readability. Standard equipment model was as follows: central locking, front electric windows, front airbags. It was possible to adjust the front seat height. The center console was one main item - the alarm button. Located just below the air conditioning system. In the back row can accommodate two passengers, but on condition that the front men are not tall.

With regard to the technical characteristics of Audi A4, 1998, the first thing should be said about the power units that offer a lot. Most of the low-power gasoline line was a 1.6 liter unit with 101 hp, then 125 hp 1.8 engine, then the 1.8 turbo 150 hp The following are the six-cylinder engine 2.4 and 2.8 liters and 165 hp and 193 respectively. By the way, and it is worth saying that the six-cylinder unit tend to "eat" oil, the level of which must be constantly monitored. In the case of oil starvation may later require an expensive engine repair.

Among the diesel engines offered 1.9 liter turbocharged unit with 90 and 110 hp The most powerful was a 2.5 liter engine that A4 clocked up to 220 km / h. Since this is a power unit that is to say a little bit about them and the service. On cars with a gasoline engine oil should be changed every 15 thousand. Km, with diesel engines every 7 th. Km. Also, every 60 thousand. Km. Timing belt replacement is required.

The front suspension of the model established in the multi-link independent and consisted of eight and levers. This design was developed to improve the manageability and increase comfort. But at the same time, it had a significant drawback - low reliability. The arms had to be changed often enough, even though, as their cost was considerable. Ball bearings are pressed on the arms and had to completely change lever. Since 1998, the vehicle began to install modified suspension, the reliability is increased. Today almost all of the first generation A4 are already equipped with the new arms, despite the fact that they have been previously issued in 1998.

Also worth mentioning arms and stabilizer into which the ball joints. Their reliability has also been low, and to increase its number of engineers has redesigned similar to the Audi 80. As a result, the rack can nurse 40-60 thousand. Km. As for the steering tips and wheel bearings, it usually should be replaced after 50-70 thousand. Km. At the rear suspension of the car under consideration can not say anything negative. It is quite reliable. The only thing worth noting - the rear wheel bearings go smaller - 30-40 thousand. Km. In general, a car with proper care a long time does not cause any trouble to its owner.

B5 facelift (1998-2001)

Audi refreshed the model in the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales beginning in Europe in early 1998. Besides the introduction of a 2.4 L 30-valve V6 (replacing the outdated 2.6 V6), the most important additions to the range were the 2.5 L V6 TDI engine with 150 PS (110 kW) and standard quattro and a 6-speed gearbox, as well the new high-performance S4, now part of the A4 lineup (the previous S4 had been a Audi 100). New taillights, headlights, door handles, and other minor exterior/interior changes rounded out the cosmetic updates.

In mid 1998, the 1.8T engine available outside Europe had its power output raised to 170 PS (125 kW), while the 12-valve V6 was replaced by the 30 valve unit that had been available in Europe for two years.

In 1999, Audi debuted an even higher performance model, the RS4, like its predecessor RS2 available only in the Avant body.
